South Congress Couples Film Photo Shoot in Austin, Texas
Rob and Christina fell in love on South Congress in Austin, Texas. Their couples photography session shot on film captured their love story. As a photographer based in ATX, I love highlighting all the city has to offer through my lens.
Christina and Rob Fell in Love on South Congress
South Congress holds a special place in Christina and Rob's hearts. When Christina asked me to capture their Austin, Texas couples photoshoot there, I couldn’t have been more excited — it’s where Rob worked when they first started dating. They made their first memories there together, exploring local shops and soaking in the Austin energy. Christina and Rob wanted to capture their Austin love story before they moved to NYC together.
South Congress is the Perfect Location for Engagement Photos in Austin, TX
South Congress is an iconic Austin spot for shopping, dining, and live music. This street is home to Austin staples like the Continental Club, the Austin Motel, Homeslice Pizza, Feathers Vintage, and Allens Boots. It is widely recognized as an ATX hot spot by locals and visitors alike. It has something for music lovers, vintage shoppers, and foodies alike. Christina and Rob reminisced about dates spent grabbing a slice at the Homeslice window, shopping for vintage treasures at Feathers and Prototype, and enjoying wine and pasta at June’s All Day. It was literally a walk down memory lane.
South Congress is such a great location for any couples shoot – it’s so easy to simply walk up and down the street, enjoying what it has to offer while snapping pictures of your natural love story. I live only a few blocks away, so we were able to meet at my place for free parking and simply stroll over to our ideal locations. A shoot on South Congress truly feels like an afternoon out with friends – because it is! South Congress makes it so easy to stop for a round of drinks to help you loosen up if you’re feeling nervous. It’s also a super pet friendly area, so you can even bring your dog along, too! Whatever will make you and your partner feel most at ease and like yourselves, we will make it happen and South Congress is a perfect place to do it. I love getting to know my couples and fostering a relaxing and comfortable environment that will create the most beautiful photos.
We met at the start of golden hour, just as the sun was starting its descent. Golden hour is my favorite time to shoot because it creates the most beautiful and flattering light, especially for film photography. It’s also the perfect time of day on South Congress – the street slopes slightly uphill, so there aren’t many shadows from buildings blocking your light. All the businesses are open so you can pop in to use a restroom, do some shopping, or grab something to eat!
South Congress can get pretty crowded, especially during events like F1 races or SXSW. But, my style of shooting lets us blend into the crowd easily without causing disruptions or bringing too much attention to you and your partner. It wasn’t too crowded for Christina and Rob’s shoot, but I always have a contingency plan just in case. The side streets along South Congress are stunning as well, with beautiful greenery and various flowers that are always blooming all year round. We can easily walk down the quiet neighborhood streets and get beautiful photos, and pop back onto Congress for key spots like the I Love You So Much mural.
Vintage Fashion Helped Tell the Story
Christina and Rob have iconic style I wanted to be sure to showcase in this shoot. They both love vintage pieces, clean lines, and mixing textures. I gave them some guidelines for what looks best on film (avoid busy patterns, clothes with text, super bright colors), but they didn’t even need them. This couple always looks effortlessly cool and coordinated their vibes perfectly for the shoot. Rob wore an easy but tailored denim button down with white vertical stripes from Stag, which went perfectly with Christina’s vintage American Apparel denim skirt. Christina paired her mini with a vintage leather vest she snagged in New York. Her silver accessories added a subtle shine that complimented the look – especially an organic shaped necklace from Lovecraft. Christina and Rob looked both perfect for film and perfectly themselves, which is so important for capturing the organic moments that create photos you will cherish forever.
Film Photography Will Make Your Love Story Shine
I specialize in film photography – that is photos taken on 35mm film you remember buying in the 90s, rather than digital photography with a memory card. I love working with film for so, so many reasons. I love the grain that you just can’t quite reproduce with a digital shot, the warm tones that remind you of photos in your old family albums, and the literal magic that is capturing light on a physical film negative. I love creating images that have the vintage feel of art you want to hang on your walls. Christina and Rob were so onboard – they wanted photos that they could hang up with the art they have collected. They wanted photos that captured not just how they look together, but how they feel about each other. We all agreed that film photography does just that, and they were so thrilled with the end results! Christina’s mom even ordered some prints.
